Princesses to the Rescue: The Deep Water Horizon Series

Like most Floridians, the Deep Water Horizon Oil Spill consumed my summer as I waited for the imminent destruction of our coastline. Local hair salons began collecting hair to ship to the gulf to help absorb the oil flooding the coast. While this altruistic act of individuals seemed as unlikely to help as anything BP was doing, it made me think about the absence of the corporate voice, no corporation offered to help BP.  Of all the Florida businesses most likely to be hurt by this environmental disaster Disney tourism would be hit the hardest, it would be in their best interest to help out, but they didn’t. I wondered what it might look like if the Disney Princesses long flowing hair was cleaning up this oil spill? The ink drawings are the initial investigation of the idea; the site-specific wall drawing is another. I am interested continuing this exploration, using the compositional structure of the ink drawings to make a larger wall work. My work plan during the residency would include working through some material experimentation (collage, silk-screening, ink, color) considering how this work needs to relate to the wall (in it, on it or as a discrete work) and developing a maquette for a site-specific project.
